Don't know your source of this list but I believe it to be WRONG! Unless they are grouping all sub-species together as one. But then the list would read; Elephants,Hippo's,Rhino's,etc. The Cape Buffalo, I believe, are in the 2000# + range. I'm from the "Great Plains" and a back ground of growing up in a slaughter house. I've shot and butchered several "American Bison" (not true buffalo) and have never seen one near 2000#'s myself. Does your list include domestic land mammals? I've seen several 3000# bovine (cattle) and many breeds of draft horses reach the 2000#+ mark so I guess I have more ???'s for you than answers. Want to start over?

Though i cannot tell you the weight of other animals, i can tell you why. It comes from darwins ideas on evolution. He says that animals that are geographically seperated, though may be from the same species, encounter different situations, and different traits may prove more helpful to these animals. They would be able to reproduce more, making the commonality of animals in that region to have that trait.
