OK i heard with smoothwall, it will take your HD and totally form it into a firewall, but all i need is something that runs in the background nothing big for my ubuntu but just something simple for protection.

Squid works good in Ubuntu.
there are others, they can be found in the Synaptic Package Manager, but as always, 2 firewalls will conflict. Learn the Iptables and how to use them, a firewall really isn't needed if iptables is set up.
