Contact your local Red Cross chapter and inquire about lifeguard certification classes.

In order to work as a lifeguard at most pools, you have to have a current lifeguard certification, first aid certification, and CPR certification.

Lifeguard class is several weeks and first aid class is 8+ hours. CPR is a good 8 hours too. At the end, you have to take a test, and if you pass you get a certification that's good for 1 year.

Lifeguard and first aid certifications are good for 3 years.

I originally took classes with the Red Cross. After completing the courses and taking some tests you receive your certification. The hardest part of the class for some members was that you had to swim a 500 (20 laps) without stopping. Since the Red Cross in my community does not have a pool (I don't know how many do) the class was located at a nearby community pool. At the Red Cross website (http://www.redcross.org/) you can search for your local section of Red Cross. Their website should include information on where to find classes. Also, the YMCA (http://www.ymca.net/) offers lifeguard classes through Red Cross so I would suggest checking out the program schedule of your local YMCA. I also know that Boy Scouts of America has a program (by Dad has taken it). If there is a pool that you would like to work at I would inquire what certifications are needed beforehand. Also some pools have their own lifeguard program for their employees. At the pool I work at we have a week long in-service once a year that certifies us. This was probably more information than you needed, but I hope I helped!

two accepted ways I know of, boy scouts, and ARC.

Best bet: call and ask your local American Red Cross chapter when and where they hold the next session. Be prepared though, the last I checked the entrance exam was swimming something like 500 yards straight.
