do you need good grades to get into art school?

I think a combination of decent grades, a good portfolio of your work and a list of outside activities or groups you belong to and participate in may make you a more well rounded person. A school may be more willing to overlook if some grades are poorer than others if they know you are an active member of your school or community. Ask lots of good questions while interviewing at different schools. Good luck

No, you need C's to get into most schools including art schools. Just look at the admissions requirements. If you have a great portfollio, just meet the minimum admission standards. Art students don't take academic classes anyways, except maybe a couple of electives and art history courses which are generally easy.

Maybe just submit a good portfolio to the school with a well written letter.

If you want to go to a state institution then you should look at their admissions criteria. They would be the same for any major.
