Does it matter? I've heard that the coke can eat away the can. I've also heard that it should be empty but with the top tab in tact. How does one do this? Any help?

Empty the can but leave the tab intact.
It IS true that coke will eat away the aluminum can in a few years.
the way most people do this is penetrate the bottom of the can with an exacto knife or similar and cut an opening. When the can in punctured; you will have am artesian fountain of soda; so do this outside where it will not matter if there is a mess. then rince the inside of the can out, and after the can is dry; store the can for safe keeping.

Full, it will not eat away at aluminum, just make sure it doesnt get hot or it can explode
