Yes, you need to cycle both tanks to build up the beneficial bacteria. Saltwater tanks are a bit different because they use live rock, which already has some bacteria on it. Freshwater tanks can be cycled using a fishless cycle or a fish cycle (cruel to the fish who are used for the cycling process and not necessary). In a planted tank, you can also use a silent cycle, since plants use the ammonia in the photosynthesis process. Here are some reference materials on cycling...

You definitely need to cycle a freshwater tank as well as a saltwater tank. I have never done a saltwater tank, but to cycle the freshwater one (without fish) you use ammonia and fish food and wait for the nitrogen cycle to kick in. Hope that helps!
There is a great aquarium forum here if you want more details, it focuses on goldfish but there are saltwater enthusiats too, and people are always glad to help for research: http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/forum/index.php?act=idx

Yes, you have to cycle freshwater aquariums also, but it would be different than for a saltwater tank. The first link is an excellent reference for complete tank cycling of goldfish aquarium. The second is for tropical freshwater tanks.

Yes you have to cycle both kinds. The process is basically the same, but the bacteria is different between freshwater and saltwater. They both do the same job though.

the nice and cozy button is the startup of the tank. For freshwater, all you do is fill the tank up, bubble some air by ability of the water for some days, upload a clear out and also you're prepared to bypass. yet for saltwater, you should create a colony of micro organism on your clear out previously you commence putting your severe priced ocean fish in. This calls for that you position a million small damselfish on your tank in step with 10 gallons of water for type of 6 weeks or till all of them die from ammonia poisoning. once there's a construct-up of ammonia interior the tank, the micro organism will commence to style, and also you'll be close to to putting your real fish in. yet even after your tank is time-honored, you've rather some different artwork to do. do no longer overstock your tank. For a ninety gallon, i'd propose no more suitable than 5 medium sized fishes (like tangs, angels, and so on.). upload each and each of the fish in directly on the starting up, so that you'll be able to all get used to at least one yet another and set up their territories. Ocean fish want a lot of hiding places, as they're used to living in corals with alot of caves and tunnels. do not underestimate the magnitude of this, fish rigidity is very real. The more suitable weak an ocean fish feels, the more suitable rigidity it is going by ability of. The more suitable rigidity, the a lot less healthful the fish. you also ought to attempt the pH each few weeks, and do a 25% water replace each 3 weeks. this may properly be a discomfort for a ninety gallon tank, rather once you should lug gallons in the time of your position. do no longer overfeed. it is even worse for saltwater because fungi and algae directly strengthen in case you overfeed. This all may look like rather some artwork, yet once you get used to it, the great thing about the fishes will make it truly worth it. also, be prepared to spend ALOT. Salt blend isn't low priced, neither are the finding out concepts, fish nutrients, and different resources you'll want to commence it up. also, you want to attend to to inform a good searching, healthful fish on the fish keep. some merchants will attempt to promote an risky fish that has hollow-in-the-head or some fungal an infection. Do your analyze on the thanks to search for a fish. back, it is more suitable difficult with ocean fish because they're more suitable delicate. good success.
