From the 20th century only....

It doesn't matter if it's an era of Swing, or 50's Rock N Roll, or Grunge---which decade would be the best decade of music?

Mine is the 1990's.

I think if you want to really appreciate music, and be open-minded, you can't go by the decade that it came out.

I think that people often get the false impression that songs from their youth are inherently better than the music the next generation releases.

I think there are a number of reasons for this, but the main one is that when you look back on childhood music, you tend to only focus on the songs you like.

Also, when you listen to a radio station, they're not going to play a song from your childhood that topped at #65 on the charts for one week and then just dissappeared. They're going to be playing, for the most part, the songs that made it into the top ten of any one year.

If you ONLY play a "best of" collection of any decade, then you may get a false impression that the decade had better music than the kind we hear today.

The quality of contemporary music is lower, because people at radio stations don't necessarily know what's going to be a hit, and sometimes, if a song isn't that good, but it's by a big name artist, they'll play it anyway.

The bottom line is that the quality of music has always been so-so. Music isn't really better or worse than it's ever been.

Think of your favorite songs of all time. Now think of when the songs were released and the gaps between those songs. Some of them may not seem that big, but imagine if you had to go back in time and wait four months to hear the next song that you really liked.

Just something to think about.

Hard. Every decade has been significant in terms of musical evolution. I wouldn't say the 1990s is the best. Nirvana, Creed, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are honestly the only bands of that era I give credit to. I would say the 1960s. Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, the Stones, Pink Floyd, the Who, the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Clapton, the Yardbirds, the Byrds, the Beach Boys. The classics- untouchables. The studio sound revolutionized during this period, music expanded in all genres and across the globe, lyrics were revolutionized, composition and arrangement changed. The 60s man!

I would say the 1980's! The 1990's was too hit and miss in terms of consistant quality for it to be my #1 favourite. I liked a good amount of the music from the 1990's such as New Jack Swing, Dance-pop, Contemporary Country, Adult Contemporary, Urban contemporary and Rap music (it was still good then). I like most of the secular music of the 20th Century. Thanks.

Definitely the turbulent 1960s. Great decade for music. The British invasion, Viet Nam War, Hippies, Lots going on in the 1960s. My favorite is the 1970s because I graduated high school at the end of the 1970s.

mid '80s to mid '90s, because it is at the same time as i become waiting to take heed to music. i become too youthful previously 1985 and after 1995 it grew to change into remixes and rehashes of older stuff and under no circumstances almost as good anymore- perhaps one good music each 6 months. i love the Eurythmics, Annie Lennox, David Bowie (ok, perhaps somewhat previously '80 5), Madonna, Kylie... although the music that become my childhood prominent become Band help- i'd make my mum play the record repeatedly... loved it! (yet thats a 5 12 months olds standpoint for you!)

Oooooh, I think that the 60's were cool. But the 80's were awsome too. I agree with you, the 90's were compleatly cool, too. That is the decade that most of the music I listen to is from (or the band formed during that time period).

I'd say my favorite 10 years would be like '66 to '76. That way you catch all that great late 60's stuff like The Who, the Stones, the Beatles, all that crazy psych stuff from Britain & America, plus all that awsome 70's stuff like Zeppelin, Steely Dan. etc. The 90's are pretty damn cool, though. Love me some Pavement!
