The planet Venus is in the west after sunset. It is the brightest thing in the sky after the sun and moon.
It never ceases to amaze me and others that people live for year and suddenly notice Venus, when it is visible most of the time, either after sunset or just before sunrise.
You should get out of the city more.

I am sure you saw the newly dicovered Comet Mc Naught! It is stunning. Search Wikipedia for the best answer. It has just become visible in the southern hemisphere since Jan. 19th!
