No, not a good idea unless you are experienced wih breeding, and even then they can only be together during the breeding and need to be removed afterwards. The female will kill the male or injure it severely.

Here is a good site with betta info: http://www.bettatalk.com/

And info on breeding: http://www.flippersandfins.net/bettabreedingarticle.htm

As a general rule, it's not a good idea. Even during mating, the male is very rough with the female. Afterwards, he has no use for her and will attack her to protect the eggs (the females sometimes eat them), which is why in captivity, you remove the female immediately after breeding.

In a situation where they are not conditioned for breeding, depending on the individual personality of the male, he is likely to still beat up on the female, and sometimes the female can get nippy and bite his tail also.

Some people have successfully integrated them into large tanks with enough room to establish territory and provide a lot of hiding places, but as a general rule, keep them separate.

You really don't want to. It puts a lot of stress on the female. The males rip at the females fins. Female Betta's can not see in the dark so the males find them useless after mating and kill them.

I have done it. I had a 20 gallon tank with one male with three females. I kept him in a separator for two weeks and then but him in with the girls. He was a mellow male, but they all seemed to get along great. If anything, the females were the mean ones.

NO!!!! the female will tear him to pieces. in nature the female lays the eggs, and the mail come by later to fertilize them. Betta's naturally live in the cups of lily pads in the wild, so they are pretty much solitary animals. A FEMALE WILL TEAR OFF HIS FINS!! i had this happen to me once, the mail died, but the female lived for a long time after that. I loved her. : )

Not unless the female is ready to mate. The male can be very territorial and aggressive if she is not ready.
