this 1 had the most loss of life for 1 single weather event with the exception of the galvaston hurricane in 1900. this tornado had the rare distintion of managing to kill farm owners....farmers are very weather savvy people. the twister didnt look like a twister; it was so big, to them, it looked like a black rolling mass. 3 towns were completely obliterated. nothing was left standing.

2 biggest things: loss of life, and set the record of the longest continual damage path of a tornado.
btw, some belive that it wasnt just 1 tornado, but a series of exceptionally violent tornadoes that followed each other's heels.

Good question. Loss of life and loss of property. These storms struck Illinois, and Indiana on March 18, 1925, and were on the ground continuously for some 219 miles. They were very similar to the Palm Sunday storms that on April 11, 1965, were responsible for killing 256 people, mostly in Dayton, Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana. My good friend Theodore (Ted) Fujita at the University of Chicago studied these storms for much of his later life and as a result of his work we have the Fujita scale today for measuring the intensity of these storms. Also today we have Doppler radar which can detect the incipient development of these storms and give the public enough warning time to take evasive action which were not at all possible in the 1925 storms or the 1965 storms.

One big effect was the development of an early warning system. It's still not perfect, but the folks in 1925 had absolutely no warning. A second effect was an investment in weather technology, such as radar and pure research.
