A private Catholic school can probably do whatever it wants regarding staff. This is like the episode on Dawson's Creek when Jack got fired from coaching soccer because some of the parents didn't want him around their kids, no matter how good a coach he was and how much the kids liked him. Real life can be just like that. There's probably nothing you students can do, but your parents might have a talk with your principal. Good luck.

In the U.S. teachers can be fired for being gay. It isn't fair, but it's the way things are. A Catholic school would especially be likely to fire him. Tell him that you love and support him though. He needs to hear some happy words right now. He may be able to find a job in a public school though, so he'll bounce back I'm sure.

First of all, don't react to a rumor - which may not be happening at all.
Second, you are right, they should not be able to fire a great teacher solely based on how God made him, which is LGBT.
Third, if they do threaten to fire him, have all your friends ask your parents to start a petition and protest - and make sure you all sign it as well. Although it would be great if just the students protest, the administration will REALLY listen up if the parents and community get involved as well.
Fourth, make sure the local papers cover this blatent discrimination.
Good luck to you! Good question!

Their only concern should be if he's a good teacher and is not doing anything wrong. It's none of their freaking business what he does in his personal life. If the principal or anyone else causes your teacher any problems then you call me. I'll come to your school and sniff and snort and nose around in their private lives. You can bet they wouldn't like that. When I get the photos of the principal in bed with his mistress I don't think there will be any more problems.

Depending on your state/country, he might not be able to be fired purely because of his sexuality. If he is though, start a petition and get as many student (AND parent) signatures as you can. Try to get teacher signatures if you can as well. The more signatures you get the more pressure the principal has on him to do nothing. If you love how your teacher treats you it shouldn't matter that he is gay. Hell, his sexuality shouldn't even matter if he sucked as a teacher. Straighten out your principal, even if it is at a Catholic school.

If you live in the UK, your teacher should be allowed to keep his job, because of Equality and anti discrimination law. If he is fired because of his sexuality, it's probably illegal. Your student body can help this by alerting the relevant authorities, and gatherthing evidence of any bullying on the basis of him being gay.

Watch "IN and Out". (Movie with Kevin Kline)
Catholic schools can hire and fire as they see fit because they are a religious organization.
The students could send a clear message by staging a demonsration, and your teacher would be forever grateful...even if he did not get his job back.
You sound like a really nice person.

I am not too familiar with Catholic School policies; however, I think that according to federal law, it would be illegal to terminate a teacher just based solely on his sexual identity, because of the discrimination act that was passed years ago... cannot discriminate on race, creed, religion, gender, sexuality and so on. If they do fire him, I can only hope that he can afford a good lawyer and fight it!

In many places it is legal to fire someone because of their sexuality. I'd definitely suggest getting a petition around and drawing attention to the subject.
