I don't mean to profit from the misfortune of others... however:
I am creating a section on my pet sitting website (http://bossoli.com)
about the negative aspects of putting your pet in a boarding facility when you are away.

Can you please share stories about your experiences with boarding your cat or dog while you were away? All in all was it a positive or negative experience? What was your opinion about the cost? Opinion about the care of your pet and the environment of the facility?

Kennels are dirty and a haven for parasites! They are conducive to bullying behaviours between dogs and cause great stress to the animals. The chances of mauling are greatly increased, and fence fighting (through chain link) is common, which results in nose and lip injuries. Puppies younger than 12 months should NEVER be housed in kennels because they still have a chance of contracting parvo (even if vaccinated!). Kennels are cheaper than hiring a pet sitter...but keeping your pet at home is far better than putting them in a kennel. Ask a vet to endorse your pet sitting business, and you will have clients calling you like crazy! I too run a pet sitting business...have a look at my website, thecrittersitter.ca. And by the way, you have a really nice website!

The place I board my dog at is wonderful. The kennels are all 3'x5' inside and the same dimension outside. The dogs are out in small groups the entire day (they match dogs based on personality) if it's nice, or at least 3x day in the indoor or covered part if it's raining. The facility is super clean, when I toured it (unannounced) it did not even smell doggy, which amazed me. I am allowed to bring my own food, or they feed Eukanuba if I want them to use theirs. They provide blankets for all dogs. My dog loves going there and is always exhausted from all the playing when I pick him up. I've left him for two weeks and never worried about how he was doing. Cost was pretty cheap at $19 per day, though I do have to drive about 40 minutes to get there, it is worth it. My dog is much happier going there than he would be if he stayed home and had someone come over a couple of times a day (he'd rather be with people than home alone).

Having always had a pet, I always had a family member to take care of my dog. However, I know of two experiences where close family members had a very terrible experience when boarding their pets.

It was July 4th weekend and my relative was hosting a party which included fire works. As their pet, Chuck (a Sheep Dog) was getting on in years and could not stand fire works they decided to board him in the neighborhood Veterinary Hospital. He was there over the weekend. When they came to pick him up, they found his was not taken out of his cage to be walked and was lying in his own dirt and his legs were paralyzed. Their excuse was, the attendant did not show up for work.

My niece, who has a Golden Retriever has to go away on business and left Casey in a dogie day care center that did take boarders. He became ill during the night and the attendant they promised would be on duty all night never appeared. Casey tried to get out of his cage and badly injured his nose by trying to open the cage.

Sorry for the long story, but I would advise anyone to not board their pets unless it was a dire emergency.

I worked for a pet boarding facility for a while- we sterilzed with bleach inbetween and there were different sized kennels from a "kitty condo" to a smaller two level enclosure, depending on the price. Dogs were kept in outside runs or inside crates, depending on the owners preference. Inside dogs got outdoors to go to the bathroom, always singly.
