Is it safe to use a conventional oven to heat up wood, or would the wood catch on fire?

I'm doing a science fair project and need to heat up some wood (for the same amount of time) to weaken it. I need to know soon! Help!

It can be done in the oven safely all you need to do to prevent a fire is to put a potof water in there before you put the wood in. Let the water get hot and start to steam before you put the wood in. It will weaken the wood more to steam it any way.
