Goth is a subgenre of alternative music. It branched from punk in the late 70s. It retained the non-conformist attitude of punk, but did so in a more artistic way. The first bands to popularize goth were Bauhaus, Joy Division, and Siouxsie and the Banshees, but the first real goth band was Gloria Mundi.
Goth spawned to have many subgenres. Today's "trad-goth" is reminscient of the early goth music. There is also deathrock, which appeared in the very early 80s as a punkier version of goth; new wave and industrial have much in common with goth as well, though they are not directly related. Neo-folk was spawned from goth, particularly through the likes of Death in June. One of the newest "goth" genres is electronic body music (EBM), which is very controversial as to whether it's "really goth" or not.
Bands such as Marilyn Manson, Good Charlotte, Coal Chamber, Korn, Slipknot, Mushroomhead are NOT goth bands, nor is emo a kind of goth music (it spun off of punk separately from goth).

Please proceed to ignore the ignorant and idiotic comments on here. Goth is, at it's base, a subculture that evolved in the early 80s, similar to the Skinhead subculture. Goths are joined by an interest in the darker things that have been shunned by Western culture out of fear, and instead find beauty in them. Goths TYPICALLY are artistic, intellectual, and wear darker clothing, though this is definitely not "required", or defines someone as Goth. There is also a genre of music defined as Goth, which typically features darker elements, but has many different rhythmic/musical elements. Some of the most well known Goth bands are Siouxsie and The Banshees, The Cure, and Joy Division. The most important thing to remember is that almost every image about Goths concieved by the mass media is wrong. Just because someone is Goth does NOT, by ANY CIRCUMSTANCE mean that they are Satanists, Atheists, violent, mentally ill, sociopaths, or self-harmers. Just people who choose to dress certain ways and be interested in certain things.

To understand what one is, we must learn what one is NOT.
Goth is not EVIL. Goths do not worship the Devil. Goths do not necessarily hate Christianity. Religion is separate from this completely.
Goth is not EMO. Goths are so much cooler. If you move to the steryotype-emos are wimps and goths are fierce.
Goth doesn't mean you are unenthusiastic and 'blah'. It doesn't mean you physically harm yourself.
Hope you now understand what Goth is. Or isn't, at least.

well you have gothic clothing, gothic music and gothic culture. I tend not to call myself goth because I only really wear the clothing, I dont listen to much gothic music, I prefer to listen to suicide silence, motionless in white and slipknot. Then i do not take part in any goth culture. If you want to learn more there is a youtuber called 'sebastian columbine' and she makes lots of videos discussing the culture side etc.

Most of the time, if someone is Gothic, they'll have dark make-up on and black and grey clothing. But goths don't really believe in God and usually aren't enthusiastic at all. That's as much as I know about it.
Hope I helped.

Goth is a lifestyle, that involves darkness and what straights consider evil: vampires, death, makeup, and really hot pale girls.
