I think that horse slaughter houses are a good thing. They are essential for the American economy. They not only provide us with things we use in everyday life- dog food, glue, lip stick, make up, and gelatin...their meat also goes to US zoo's to feed wild animals. Why slaughter houses are causing an up stir in America's "horse friendly" community is cause people are misinformed. Many of the documents that you read about on the Internet were written up to 9 decades ago and the info provided is not a current description of slaughter houses today.
What people need to know about slaughter houses is that they do practice humanely euthinasia practices- and there are now laws protecting new arrivals for up to two weeks in case any of them are stolen or can be reauctioned because they are sound and healthy enough.
Slaughter houses serve as a way to protect us from over population- could you imagine if some of these horses that are sick and already dieing slowly were kept alive as long as possible and none were ever put to sleep....Hay and feed prices would go up making it harder to buy and even harder to find. Just as hunting, slaughtering swine and cattle, and sadly war protects other species from over population- Slaughtering horses protects them too so the healthier, well taken care of horses may still live while weaker and sicker horses go on to serve a greater purpose.

And do you really want to know what happens to your equine when a vet puts him to sleep. Many of them are transported to slaughter houses while a lot of them are picked up by the same people who pick up dead cattle from dairy's and ranchs. All these animals are taken to a facility where they are set on fire.

And those horses that you were informed where their babies were slaughtered- I'm sure the reports left out that they were carrying incurable equine diseases and they did this to protect other equines that may come in contact with them.
Also before you start thinking most of the horses that go to slaughter are useless- many of the great american horse icons were sent to slaughter upon death. Their owners realized that their equine could serve a different purpose.

I'm a vet on the AVMA board and have been to horse slaughter houses here in america and in Canada and Mexico. The horses in America were treated much better and with respect.

Like I said to another girl- I'm not against slaughter houses- I am against slaughtering perfectly healthy horses that can still live a full and useful life.

A horse is an animal just like a cow. If you're vegetarian like me then fine, feel free to say that it's wrong. If you eat meat and are just saying that eating horse meat is disgusting because you've been brought up to think of them as pets, grow up.

I have no problem with horses being slaughtered any more than I do cows. Obviously since I'm a veggie, I think eating meat is completely wrong, but that doesn't mean I have a specific problem with horses being eaten.

I do not like the way they're often killed for meat, though. Because mostly they're shipped out to placed like Italy where there are practically no laws governing the humane slaughter of animals, they often suffer horrendously in terms of travel, abuse and the way they're killed. So... the fact that horses are eaten vbothers me exactly the same amount as the fact that cows are eaten (a lot), but the way in which they're often slaughtered makes me sick.

it would be ok if they did it humanely. we need the market because there are so many horses that people cant feed or afford... one reason there are people that cant feed their horses is because there is no hay... people are using all they hay ground for housing development. in some states people are even letting there horses go(opening the gates and setting them free) because they cant find any hay around. another reason is because people they cant afford to take care of them-feed, vet bills, ect.... people get into horses and dont realize how much it cost. another reason is there is way too many- over breeding. there are so many, which puts the price on horses very low-bad for the horse market. and those people that cant afford to feed or put down their horses or horses that are crippled need to take them to slaughter(as much as i hate saying that). i would rather see a horse go to slaughter rather than see it in a pasture or in a stall starving, crippled and left to slowly, and painfuly die. they just need to find away that is more HUMANE

It isn't okay. Though there are only 3 horse slaughterhouses in the country, there are plenty in other countries. Horse meat is considered a delicacy in places like France and Japan. I can't picture a dead horse on someone's plate. That is why people are trying to help out with the cause. There are a number of anti-slaughter organizations in America that try to help this problem. Reach out and be one of the ones to stop slaughter!

Because horses get made into food for other animals. Most zoos feed horse meat to their carnivores (AZA approved) because it carries less disease risk than cattle meat and is more nutritious.
It is also considered a delicacy in some other countries-- it is just Americans that abhor it (same with eating dogs, cats, guinea pigs, etc which are all food in other countries)
I am not against horse slaughter at all- as long as it is done humanely. Yes, there are some out there that are not, and that needs to be changed. But there are a ton of unwanted horses and no one can care for them all. Same with cats, dogs, etc.
And yes, I am a horse owner, trainer, and breeder. We only breed select mares and studs that we know will provide higher quality offspring, and most are successfully competing at some level or another.

OMG it is not okay. Horse slaughter is cruel. DO u know what they do to the poor horses.
they have slaughtered a baby of a world champion horse racer. 10 cents a pound. the horse would be worth a heck of a lot more than that. the foals could have dreams and there are many little kids that dream of having a pony of their own. i know i do i grow up riding every once and a while my grandma has mine i am lucky i have my pony. i get to show her and everything but other kids don't get to because there pony is getting slaughtered. me and friends will try to stop it and u should to. no one in the us eats horse meat any way so why do it here. there are 100,000 horses slaughtered in the U.S.. some one told me and my friends its the way of life. it is but it shouldn't be.

What gave you that idea? Horse slaughter is NOT okay. I'm not sure if you want to know the details or not, but the horses get crammed into a trailer for travel, then they are shot or they have their throats slit while they are still alive and very alert. Some horses are slaughtered just because their owners got tired of them or they weren't good enough. PLEASE become anti-slaughter and take every chance you get to help stop it.

It's not okay with me. I have nine horses and live with them, I love them soo much and don't know what I would do with out them, they have so much personality! I feel like I can always read them and read exactly what they're thinking all the time. That's why I'm so opposed to it. Go to the website below and you can sign a petition about it and learn all about horse slaughter and ways to help stop it. The video on that website literally brought tears to my eyes.

It's not okay. The sad truth is that there are too many horses then there are prople who want to give them homes. It is really sad that no one wants to take these horses and give them a loving home. But some of these horses just can't be saved, the goverment dosent want to have to take care of them. But some of the horses are good animals that do deserve a second chance.
