in this order:
doctor
dna test
legal counsel
if he's the dad, its going to cost him financially every month at least until this kid turns 18, or finishes college... not to mention legal fees, unless he qualifies for legal aid.

DNA tests are very common now. And I would suggest you do it so that you don't have doubt in your mind in the future.
All they do is swab the cheek of the baby and of your son and see if they are a DNA test. Call your family doctor or your local county health hospital.
You do not say where the mother is. When the baby was born I assume that the mother gave the child a name and a last name.
Your son will have to check with the Seattle District Attorney's office concernig any legal rights that he has. The DA can make the mother comply with the testing.
I know you are in shock now......but most likely that little one will bring a great deal of joy to your family. Also, I do hope this is a lesson to your son to not be having sex without protection

He needs to get a DNA test. If the mother is on finacial aide for the child (like welfare or medical), then generally it is free. If not, it can cost $100 to $1000 dollars to have it checked. Since the mother is actually the legal guardian in this case, you have to get her permission first. Then, any doctor can refer you to where to get it done, but you hav eto be refered I believe.
To change the babies last name if it is your sons, you have to go through a name change at the court house. Last time I heard, it was like $250 but this can vary by where you live. If it is proven that he is the father, you can have him out on the birth certificate. If he is not, make sure he is not on the birth certificate!
If he is the father and wants something to do with the baby, make sure he takes her to court to go over custody rights. Do this no matter what! It gives him some legal binding over the baby. With out it, she could skip town and he could never see the baby again! So you will need a lawyer, you could need a lawyer for the whole situation.
Good luck, and possible congrats on bein a grandparent!

Call the local hospital first and find out where dna testing is done in Seattle. If she hasn't filed the birth papers yet then he can get his name on them...otherwise you will have to talk to a lawyer.

well all he has to do is get a dna test to see if the child is his. tell him to go to his local health dep. or human resource dep. and they will do a paternity test for free i think. as far as the last name of the child goes, unless the mother agrees to a name change there is not much he can do. i mean if they are not married the law can not force her to give the child his last name but if the mother agrees i think it cost about 500.00 for a name change.
if he is the father it is going to cost a small fortune to raise that child.

paternity test costs vary.
regardless of the cost, run don't walk, and get the test done. any doctor can point you in the right direction.
if the child is not his he will be responsible for child support payments for the next 18 YEARS if he puts his name on the birth certificate without getting a paternity test.

You and the son can come and take the baby for the afternoon take him to your nearest pathology center. They will do the blood test, or mouth swab and if none of this works go on Maury Povich, but make sure this is something your son wants to do. Maybe he wants to be the dad no matter WHAT

First, where is the mother?. Whose name is on the birth certificate? Check with your state and child support division, if you do not want to get an attorney. For private paternity tests - all parties must be willing. The state can compel paternity dna test to establish parentage for child support. He needs to do this now, she can wait and then spring this on him years down the line, and sock him for big bucks for support. Your state child support office can answer these questions.
