I would highly recommend the book "The Hot Zone: A Terrifying True Story" by Richard Preston.

This bestselling book is about disease outbreaks from the African wilds, any of which could bloom into the next worldwide pandemic. The author visits quarantine facilities for monkeys, cave sites in Africa thought to be the origins of some of these diseases, discusses near-disasters that have occurred in the past, and goes into detail on the kind of analysis and precautions taken in labs studying these virulent agents.

It's a very good read, and parallels Crichton's fictional bestseller "The Andromeda Strain" nicely. Amazon link (1) and book summary (2) below.
