Cougar was his early stage name and as he became more popular, he wanted to drop the "Cougar" and use his rightful surname "Mellencamp."

The label he signed with in his early career wanted him to have a catchier name than Mellancamp so the sort of forced him to go by Cougar.
As he became more successful and could wield some economic power, he added the Mellancamp back to his name.
When he got old enough to not care about what the executives thought at all and knew everyone knew him by his real last name, he shed the Cougar which he never liked.
Good for him!

John Cougar sounds more pornstar-ish.
My sister and her friend used to call him John Cougar Menstrualcramp. Ha!

I will call him John Cougar until the day he dies, I don't care what he says. I am the one calling him it, so I will call him Timmy Twinkle **** if I feel like. He can refer to himself by whatever name or names he wants when he speaks, too. Its a free free world.
