I've never had any negative experiences with MAC, but it seems like the people where I live and where I've shopped and generally nicer all around. I guess maybe it's just how a lot of people are here in the South! I have noticed that a lot of times the makeup artists that are less willing to be patient and helpful at the MAC counters and stores are new or are freelance people. Sometimes they hire extra freelancers for events or if they're busy and they're there temporarily and aren't the usual full timers. I can understand why they may not be as used to dealing with a busy store or counter, and probably don't know their way around as well yet. They aren't going to have the experience with the products and color matching either so they do come off as being clueless occasionally. I've dealt with that myself and ended up correcting some of them numerous times! I'm actually trying to get a job there myself, and I can understand how it may be easy to overlook young customers. I've worked in sales positions before and a lot of the time you have to make choices whether or not you want to help a young customer that may be interested in the products, but may not make a big purchase, or if you want to help an older, more regular customer that you think is a sure sale. They're trained to sell their product, so if course they're going to try to get you to purchase additional items. It's called "power grouping" and it's when they relate how one product may look good or work well with another one so they can sell you more. A sales person at an electronics store would probably do the same thing if you were looking at something like digital camera, so it's not JUST people in the makeup industry. Unfortunately that's just how the business world works.
