Only when slowing down to the point where you would stop or downshift to resume speed.

Letting the clutch back into the same gear can sometimes cause a lurching if you don't rev the engine up to the proper point before letting the clutch pedal out.

Make sense?

You actually can just press the brake without pressing in the clutch......this uses the engine in addition to the brake to slow the car down. It is harder on the car, so I would only recommend this in emergency. However, at highway speeds, if you are slowing down to a point where you will not need to downshift, there is no need for the clutch.

only when stopping completely.

if you want to slow down,
let up on the gas

it that doesn't slow you enough,
tap the brake.
--no need to use clutch

if you're really slowing down
(make a turn, go down a hill, fast slow-down to avoid animal, garbage, car, etc...)
down shift
and use brake.

car will stall if stopped completely w/out pushing clutch in
and holding it down
(while car it still in a driving gear).

if car is in neutral
and stopped,
you don't need to hold in clutch.

if you are at a red light
and have car in first gear
keep foot on clutch
or car will stall.
--you could shift into neutral and let go of clutch while waiting at light or stop sign.

while driving,
do not put in clutch
when using the brake casually
--as mentioned above, when you just want to slow a little in reaction to driving conditions.

You use the clutch whenever you are changing gears. Using the clutch unneccessarily will wear it down. If you put the clutch in while you are braking, you won't brake as fast. The more experience you get, the more you will learn to downshift and brake at the same time allowing you to slow down or stop as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Practice, practice, practice - manual transmissions are fun!

Only if you are coming to a complete stop. By pressing the brake without disengaging the clutch you are using the combination of engine and brakes to slow the car. You must disengage the clutch before stopping completely to keep from stalling the car.

If you are slowing or stopping you should not be simply putting in the clutch, but should first let the engine help to break your speed by downshifting to the appropriate next gear. As you come to a stop you should be in first and, just before the engine begins to lug, ...THEN you push in the clutch.

OK???

Apply the brake and then put in the clutch before you reach the point that the engine will stall. This allows your engine to take on some of the braking.

You will step on the clutch pedal when you shift gears (up or down) and when you bring the car to a stop, in gear. When you step on the brake to slow the car it is usually not necessary to depress the clutch pedal, unless of course, you slow sufficiently to make it necessary to shift down..

no, keeping the clutch out until the last moment allows the engine to assist in breaking giving the car more control on the road. you should apply the clutch when the car revs drop towards minimum.

No, you don't use the clutch every time you break, only if you are shifting or coming to a complete stop
