The Donkey Kong Country game on the SNES was great.
On the computer, Elite (the original with Vector graphics) in the Commodore 64 was unbeatable.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. My all-time favorite game, takes approximately 2 hours to beat, and it has a fantastic replay value.
