So what is the difference between Intel Centrino dual-core and core 2 duo in terms of performance, speed, etc.?

Yes - One is for a mobile platform and designed to be energy conscious, the other is a desktop platform.

Basically the same idea, but two different processors.

If your label says "Centrino Duo," that means you have a Intel Core 2 Duo processor, Intel motherboard chipset & Intel wireless chipset. If these 3 components are used in a particular system, the system is qualified for the Centrino Duo label. If any of the other two components are of another make, the system will be labelled with a "Core 2 Duo" label. Conclusion: Not to worry. You have a core 2 duo processor and other components that help to deliver better performance, longer battery life and broad wireless network interoperability according to Intel.

I believe the normal chip is to have two in and out ports for information. The dual-core as 4 - so the information passes through at a much higher rate. It also is able to 'multi-task' separately.

the core 2 duo is much faster, it will out perform pretty much any speed dual core

Core 2 duo is faster because both cores can use each other's cash memory.
