Be honest with yourself first, how and why did you fail? what can you do to improve your grade, was it not studying, too many activities, dating, etc. For me, my parents put the responsibility on me in high school and college. So when I did not do well I just came cleaned and got back on track myself. Except, the one F I ever got was for cheating on the mid-term exam. in that case i lied and said i concentrated on my math exam, which I had an A, and had little time for this one.

Well, my parents are surprisingly lenient. One day, I failed a math exam I had prepared diligently for, and, upon breaking the news, they just told me to do better next time.
I would just say that I tried my best and that was the result.

Here's a secret...
Be prepared...
IN THE SAME BREATH...
Tell them that you failed an exam and that you want to go over the material WITH THEM to see why you missed it.
Catch 22...
If they say "maybe later"...You can blame them for not participating in your learning and only care to punish you for failing.
If they say "sure" then it shows that you WANT to make an effort and they will go easy on you.

This is not a sympathetic answer, but I'll say it anyway...

Once, when a Georgetown basketball player failed to make some foul shots at the end of a game, costing Georgetown the victory, he went to coach John Thompson for consolation. Thompson's response was anything but sympathetic: "Son, we pay for your books and tuition. You are expected to make those shots."

Frankly, if your parents are paying for your college education, they can make the same argument. You can't make excuses. All you can do is make sure it stops happening and get your grades back to where they should be.

Be honest....It's only a exam. It won't take your life away. If your parents are tough on you, then think that they have been hard on you.

Let them find you crying your eyes out. They'll go into what they can do to help mode..then tell them you hate to disappoint them so, but......
