It means that you have traveled in a straight line. With a given distance traveled, or arc length of travel, the maximum displacement is achieved when you travel in a straight line, and that displacement is equal to the distance traveled. If you travel in an exact circle, or any other path that ends at the point you started from, you have a displacement of zero. Any displacement in between is possible, too. For example, if you travel 3 miles and then turn 90 degrees and travel 4 miles more, you have formed two legs of a right triangle; your displacement is the hypotenuse, 5 miles, even though the distance you traveled was 7 miles.
