Opel GTC. I saw it in a book and it was cool looking, and is fast for its segment. Try Yahoo! autos for specifications.

I have only driven a sri corsa but it was incredibly slow so i dread to think what a 1.2 would be like. that said vauxhalls are great cars. I would try to go for a 1.4 in what ever you buy, the insurance may be a bit more but it won't be alot

Corsas are cracking cars. Hold there money well too. Fiestas are like hammerite and do what it says on the tin. I've just taken a corsa 1.4 in and that engine is fantastic and unburstable.
Jap cars are good but expensive when things go wrong as is insurance.
French cars are held together with glue and the interior will fall apart as you drive along.

vauxhall corsa 1.0 engine mods add an extra elastic band and wind tightyly good 4 an extra 10mph. Exterior... stickers lots of stickers always a good mod chav lights on the windscreen washers blue is the best colour. Interior bin bags are best for seat covers and pink steering wheel cover and fluffy dice and that lot will cost you practically nothing and increase the value of the car by double

You've already mentioned it but I'd go for the Corsa. Highly modifiable, cheap and generally has a fantastic engine. The sportier models really shift.

I'd go with a used VW GTI. The structure of the engine and body are very firm. The GTI maintains it's resale value well. And there are a lot on the road b/c they have been manufactured over some 7-8 years. Just have a good mechanic look it over for you before you buy. (In Los Angeles, we have a lot of good German-American mechanics who are factory trained.)

If you are looking for something to modify, is cheap to insure and run look at the Citroen Saxo. You should be able to get a 1.1 around 6 years old for GBP 2k.
Try Yahoo used cars.

Whatever you get, go for a turbodiesel engine. These can be modified easily, by virtue of the turbo. You can re-map the ECU ("chip it"), with big gains in power and torque.
Diesel engines can take it, because they are inherently strong.
Do not buy a Vauxhall. They are naff and totally uncool.
