Ivory is extremely sensitive to humidity and temperature fluctuations. The most important factor is keeping conditions as constant as possible to prevent shrinking and expanding.
Never attempt to remove the surface coat pigment or patina, as it affords protection for the piece, and is an indication of age.
Many liquids, including water and cleaning solutions, are destructive to ivory, and should be avoided. Applying water may cause swelling and cracking. Extremely dirty pieces should be referred to a professional.
Dry cleaning methods may be attempted: Using a clean, soft paintbrush or toothbrush, carefully brush dirt off the object.

Remember: When in doubt, consult with a professional.

Ivory does not go yellow with age !! It goes yellow because of dirt in the air, such as cigarette smoke, Ivory WHITENS with age. If you want a patina on it there are various methods, from allowing smoke to get on it, to staining it with tea or coffee. The Chinese are experts at tinting it, to-day they mainly use commercial dyes used for textiles. It can be cleaned with soap and water, lemon juice. Things like combs or piano keys can be kept clean with a mixture of Spanish whiting and luke warm water, or Spanish whiting and methylated spirits. Some thing with intricate carving can be soaked in cold milk and gently brushed with a soft tooth brush, then thoroughly dried with a soft cloth. The secret of keeping it clean and in excellent condition, is to always dry it absolutely dry. If you want to whiten it, coat it with turpentine and allow it to dry in the sun. Remember Ivory will always remain a living substance, if the atmosphere is too dry the ivory will crack. Keep it away from radiators and electric light bulbs, lamps etc.. Ivory is a wonderful substance to touch and beautiful to look at. None -the-less it looks far more beautiful where it belongs, as tusks on the magnificent elephants.
