Well this may not be popular but it sure makes you feel good after wards. You can have a fund raising Gala. The fun part comes in when you all dress up like celebrities (formal black tie) and you decorate your place with foe glitzy decorations and have a fancy dinner, etc. Instead of getting gifts from your friends, have them bring a donation for a predetermined charity. You can either do toys for children or cash donations to an organization and to make it more fun hold an auction and buy some cheap, fun things to auction off to the highest bidder and all proceeds go to the charity.
You'll have fun and you'll feel good knowing that you helped the needy outside of the holidays.

A few years ago my sister had a Luai theme and it was a big hit with everyone. Or have a masquerade that would be really cool. Good luck!=)
