Depending on what you're looking for you might want to buy one already put together.
I used to build my own setup but found that the cost savings isn't quite what it used to be. There are a few websites out there that do a good job of offering a wide range of customizable options as well. Got my latest system from:
www.ibuypower.com
For 700 bucks they'll put together a core 2 duo. All kinds of options available and it comes with a pretty useful warranty too

Depends on what you want your computer to be able to do.
you can price parts at http://microcenter.com
On the right side of the page look for BYOPC
you'll need a
case
Power supply
Fan
motherboard
Note: some have onboard sound and graphics
processor
hard drive
memory
CD and/or DVD drive
USB and/or firewire ports (also may be included on motherboard)
sound card
graphics card
Monitor
Printer
Cables
You can save money by buying a BareBones unit but
You might find that it is cheaper (and easier) to buy one prebuilt that meets your needs
If you can find a Transfer station (Trash dump) that deals with computer equipment (Check your yellow pages) then you can pick up alot of the parts there
I have one about ten miles from me and another about 25 miles away (never been there though)

The price can vary from $400 to thousands of dollars. It is hard to say. What exactly are you looking for?
