In Christianity, the rainbow is the ultimate symbol of the story of the flood. God offers the rainbow as the sign of the covenant God makes with humanity, the promise never again to destroy the world with the waters of a flood.

In Greek mythology, Iris, the goddess of spectrum, was once in love with a man name Turats. They had a son named Bowsephus who inherited his mother's beautiful colors in his hair, which changed with his mood. Zeus makes Bowsephus a god in this myth and sets him in the sky. Bowsephus visits his mother to reassure her he will return frequently. Still she cries when he is gone and wets the Earth with her tears, then Apollo raises the sun to bring Bowsephus. As he races home to see what is wrong, the colors of his beautiful hair are reflected across the sky. And that is where we get the rainbow.

Every culture has this story! What is the earliest mention of the rainbow? The Legend of Gilgamesh, written in cuneiform on clay tablets approx. 4000 years prior to the written Christian Bible.

I could go on--but then, I subscribe to the water vapor and light theory.....

A rainbow is an optical and meteorological phenomenon that causes a spectrum of sunshine to seem contained in the sky at the same time as the solar shines on to droplets of moisture contained in the Earth's surroundings. It takes one among those a multicoloured arc. Rainbows brought about by technique of photo voltaic continuously seem contained in the area of sky right now opposite the solar.

Sunlight is made of a lot of different colors all blended together, appearing almost white. (That's what white light is, all colors of light together.)

Each color has it's own frequency.

When the angle from which the light is coming, and water in the air are just right, the light hits the water.

The light of different frequencies is bent differently, separating the colors from each other.

The water in the air acts like a prism, in effect.

At least, this is my understanding of it. I may not have it quite right.

"The rainbow" sounds funny to me, you mean rainbows, all of them, not some one particular one, right?

The best way to see rainbows is, if it rains while the sun is shining, turn your back to the sun.

Most of the time you'll see at least a little piece of rainbow.

Often two, a shadowy, lighter rainbow paralelish to the first.
