Ok the power in the bathroom went out along with one plug in the garage at the opposite end of the house. I switched out the light plug and GFI in the bathroom(old wiring). The light worked but not GFI. after a couple of days it started going out again. A couple of days at a time then work for a couple. An electrican came out and redid my work. And it does the same thing. Any tips's. A short in the lightfixture maybe?Does anyone know the next step I take to troubleshoot?

Call the electrician to come back again. He/she missed something. It might not have been apparent because it worked when the left.

There are too many possibilites to tell you how to do the diagnostics. Because you are asking if it can be a short in the light fixture, I know that you are over your head on this one.

Let the electrician have another try at it, now that you know it was not as simple as everyone originally thought. The first thing that I think of is an intermittant open circuit caused by a loose wire.

Does the breaker keep blowing? If not, why is everyone using the term short? That shows a major lack of understanding electrical circuits.

i would check out the fixture at the other end of the house 1st. do a continuity check on the whole circuit next. somethings causing the short intermittently, maybe the fixture in the garage is getting water, rain etc. on it. good luck.

If this is an old fluorescent fixture, perhaps it is the ballast. The P rated ballasts will do this if they overheat. Best thing is to replace the ballast, or the whole thing. if this is the case.
