I realize that the closer you can match the gearing to the road and engine speed, the better your MPG will be.

But don't you reach a point of diminishing returns, and it's just technology for technology's sake?

I would never buy a Toyota product anyways because of the high price of maintenance (among other things)......but this is absolutely ABSURD. They are trying to be so technical that they forgot about what really matters. I don't want to feel my **** transmission shift every 2 seconds. Make it a 14 speed and then it'll be slow like an 18 wheeler. How much is this piece gonna cost to rebuild when all the bands give out. I'LL PASS. Oh and by the way.....if I had thought of what the guy said right above me first, I woulda given that answer instead.

If you keep the engine in the power, it will be quicker. Maybe they are trying for drivability and mileage. I would have to know what the ratios are to really understand if I would or would not like it. I would think that a CVT would have worked better, but who knows.
