My Uncle didn't quit smoking - he just decided not to smoke that day and the day after and the day after...
He remained a smoker, and when asked if he wanted to sit in smoking or non-smoking he always said smoking. He just chose not to have a cigarette at that time.
He went from about 40 a day to none! It works for him!

I never used the patches when I quit. I've heard of to many health issues with them. I bought lots of gum, drank lots of water and ate small little meals to keep my blood sugar stable. Otherwise you get shaky. I won't kid you it's tough for the first 2 weeks. After that it gets easier. Hang in there you will feel so much better. It's worth it. If you are worried about gaining weight, go on a low carb diet. Eat lots of vegetables, fruits, and meat. Try to stay away from white bread, white rice, starchy foods, coffee and alcohol. Chew gum when ever you have the need to smoke. Stay busy. Best of luck to you. I made it, I am smoke free and glad I am.

Do not hang out with smoking and drinking people nor hit the casinos.
When you feel like smoking try to delay it for another hour or so.
After about 18 days you will begin to develop your new habit.
I stopped over 18 months ago and only once did I fall off the wagon when I went gambling for a weekend.
You'll be surprised how you will not think about it and how you will appreciate having a nice clean smell on your body and in your clothes closet.

you have to want to. The first few days is like hell on earth though. But just deal with it. I stopped new years eve, but have still been smoking when going out drinking. But the more weeks i go without smoking in the week, the more i dont want one when im out at the weekend.
I could quite easily have one now actually, but i have reached the stage where i could quite easily not aswell. Just got to keep going. If it gets too much, have one just to calm you down. and then think, if that happens again next week I will have one again. Chances are you wont be bothered.

think about death. Think about what it would be like to die a slow horrible death from emphysema or lung cancer. Imagine your family at the funeral. This is what will happen if you do not quit, if its not already too late. Imagine drowning in a swimming pool, gasping for air while your lungs fill with water. Now imagine that feeling every moment of every night and day for months and months until you die from emphysema. Imagine hitting a dilotid pump every 15 minutes just so you can keep from screaming in agony from the pain of lung cancer.
I quit 2 years ago. Cold turkey after 17+ years of about a pack a day. That is over 140,000 cigarettes. Keep doing the things you liked doing before you quit. Drink that beer, that cup of coffee. go to the clubs, do not change those things. Just do not smoke. You will get used to doing them without a cigarette. It takes time. Months to get over the cravings. But it will get easier.

I've never smoked but know people who have and quit. They said cold turkey is the best, chew gum, and stay busy that way you don't think about smoking, also try to avoid other smokers.

if you fail this time then learn from it...sounds a bit negative but addictions are complex...if you tried to give up before then remember what got you back smoking,,,anticipate danger times such as after meals or breaktimes at work and have something in place to replace smoking..when you feel weak make sure you have the reasons why you gave up in your mind ready...The physical withdrawal symptoms only last about 4-5 days so in less than a weeks time you will be through the hardest part...but you must find a way to maintain your abstinence and the best way is through rewarding yourself...anyway good luck...it takes guts to do what your doing.......

you must get it fixed in your mind that you are a non smoker. rather than a smoker who has'nt had a cig. i stopped after smoking between 40 and a 100 a day for many years. i feel much better for it, and believe me being a non smoker is far better than being a smoker. it does take a long time to get the urge out of your system, about 5 years in my case.. give yourself an incentive put half of the money you spent on cigs in a jar and buy whatever with it.best of luck

Here's to you! Congratulations for the rest of your life.
Make the effort to change your thinking to the reasons why you are quitting, rather than thinking how you miss those cigs. Whenever you catch yourself longing to smoke, stop right there and consciously change. If you have to, pull out your list of positives, and say them or shout them!
Don't forget to have healthy snacks on hand and lots of fruit juice and water for the first week or so.
