Only people who specialize and are trained in proper care of reptiles should own snakes...the average person should NOT own a snake...yes, they are soo cool, but they are soooo dangerous..and often, when they are owned by non-specialist humans they suffer malnutrition, improper housing, dangerous handling, generally they become unwell and dangerous. (they can eat your pets-dogs and cats-your children, your neighbors children, and you)
I myself adore snakes, and would love to have a python or restrictor of my own..but I love them enough to put their well being above my silly desire to own such a neat "pet" (snakes ARE NOT pets, THEY ARE LIVING wild creatures of nature NOT MEANT TO BE KEPT IN A CAGE)

I’m not going to tell you to not get a snake like some other people here. But if you have never had any kind of reptile or snake, then the Ball Python is a good bid. They do not get very big, they are relatively good feeders, and they are very forgiving regarding ‘beginner mistakes’.

Now, as far as large snakes go, I have done a lot of research on them, and I have a small personal list of large breed snakes that I will not keep as pets. Anacondas, and Burmese Pythons get too big, and are just too aggressive. You have to keep in mind that when your large breed snake reaches a size where he could potentially threaten your life (just about all large breed snakes will reach that size), you will need to have another person who is not afraid of snakes to be near you while you stick a hand in to feed him, or if you have to clean his cage incase you are attacked. Just a side note, if you are being constricted, and you have an arm free, try to grab the end of the tail, and ‘peel’ him off of you.

Also, when your snake grows to his full length (15-20’), he will basically need his own room. Literally, he will need a bedroom.

If you are dead set on getting a large breed snake, then I would have to suggest the Hog Island Boa. Their temperaments aren’t as good as, say, a Red Tailed Boa, but they do not get as big.

I’m not going to bore you with more blah blah blah. But if you have any questions, please E-mail me, and I will be happy to help you.

One last thing, to the people who said to not get a large snake because they will eat you, and your loved ones. These attacks are real, but to anyone with half a brain, keeping a snake in a cage is not that difficult, and you are at least 10x more likely to be attacked by a dog.

What kind of large snake are you talking about? If you have to ask then you are a beginner herper and shouldn't even think of the larger breeds. Why in anyone's right mind want a snake that can potentially kill you? Burmese, retics and anacondas you can find at reptile shows. But they don't recommend selling to a beginner. Where will you put a large snake? The 3 I have already mentioned reach 20 feet min. Where will you put it? Do you know where to get goats (or other similar sized snack packs) for food every month? Do not buy one on impulse. research them first and decide what will be best for you first.

Simple, don't. we have a reptile store in our area, they have sold 6 "large" snakes in the last year. mostly burmese pythons. one I bought. i still have mine as well as 3 of the other five. The snake got too big for them and i had to take them. they are a huge responsibilty and hard to feed one of my older berms is eating small pigs, at $150 a week that is a lot of money.

there is easily an entire determination of snakes that could want to in structure you. for sure corn snakes are what maximum might want to point, yet you are able to also evaluate, royal pythons, northern pine snakes, hognose snakes, milk snakes, king snakes and rat snakes. all the above are extremely uncomplicated to take care of, they require minimum interest, appreciate being dealt with and all have very different personalities. Corn snakes are available in an entire array of varieties, yet once you're searching for something that is going to be more effective energetic, more effective interesting to feed and larger, then perchance this snake wont fulfill you! yet they're very sturdy snakes to commence with, as are king snakes, rat snakes and milk snakes, they're very similar. i does no longer truly propose a royal python to commence off with, it is a newbie python and not in any respect counseled as a newbie snake. If it really is something that you truly pick, commence with a corn snake first. Northern Pine Snakes and Hognose snakes are even more effective interesting yet are tremendous for novices too. What makes them more effective interesting is they act as a rattlesnake, hissing and damn their tails, yet they're easily bluffing and are thoroughly possibility free. they're tremendous to witness feeding have remarkable potential and tremendous personalities. they're basic to address see you later as you're positive in choosing up snakes. basically be particular you forget concerning the damn, they truly are basically bluffing! wish this permits!!
