My computer was working fine before today. i had this same problem about 7 months ago also.

i had a gigabyte MoBo with a 2.8 p4 a 40 gig and a 80 gig ide hard drives. when i restart my computer it wouldn’t detect my hard drive so it wouldn’t boot up. if i pulled out the ide cables and plugged them back it in would work for a few minuets then crash and restart and the same problem it wouldn’t detect the hard drives. So I ask the IT guy at my work and he said it sounds like my ide controllers are going out. He didn’t tell me how to fix the problem so i decided to replace the mobo.

Today
i have since then replaced my gigabyte mb to a asus and now ia have a 80 gig and a 160 gig sata hd. and i am getting the same problem

any idea what it could be?

If your operating system is on the 80 gig drive, then the 80 gig drive is probably failing and you will want to replace that drive. I am not sure why you got rid of the 40 gig, but I guess you wanted more space.

You can go the the Hard Drive Manufacturer site and download their Disk Checking Utility. It will create either bootable floppies or a bootable CD depending on what you want. Then, you will boot up off off the CD or floppy disks and check your hard drive for errors. If that comes back clean, then the problem is elsewhere and probably is the ribbon cable. I doubt the problem is the motherboard, since it had been replaced, but if replacing the ribbon cable fixes the error, then the problem is the motherboard.

If it become operating ok previously setting up the recent not person-friendly force, it will be something straight forward, like a free connection/ make advantageous all cables are inserted tightly into the CD and perplexing force, as well as to the mobo sockets. that is person-friendly to by twist of destiny dislodge them throughout installation of recent equpment. when you're utilising a similar cable for both the not person-friendly force and CD force, make advantageous the jumpers are splendid on the recent not person-friendly force. even with the very shown actuality that I under no circumstances use a similar cable for the not person-friendly force and CD, it must be executed. yet you should set one because the carry close and one because the slave. If all else fails, it will be a foul CD force. once you've a spare, hook it up and word if it truly works. I keep spares of all parts round only for this objective. even though it sounds person-friendly that the CD would artwork previously the recent not person-friendly force and under no circumstances now, so i assume the project is appropriate to the recent not person-friendly force.

sounds like a virus I once had. this malicious code accessed the built in windows id security files, and wouldn't let me log on, boot up, or anything else, and system-restore did not fix the problem. My solution came from doing a clean re-install from a boot recovery disk set provided by the pc manufacturer.

First make sure you fully connected the ribbon cable to the HD and controller. If it still does this, try replacing the ribbon cable.
