I hope you are able to get your arms around this: "A campaign pledge is not a true mandate for an electorate" I read that quote from a class book for political science 30 years ago. It still hold true today.
You are right about the claims but think about it, why would it bother any one running for office to say something they know can't happen as long as it gets them in office. And then what, there are a million reasons why they can't do it, number one being the real reason that they were probably aware of in the first place.
When you and others decide on term limits, we will have much more control of what direction the politician takes.
If you want to find out why we can't have universal health care and why were are not being told the truth, look were our money is going... Try the national debt and what's going to happen down the road.
By the way, it would be harder to vote a: Step down because you didn't do what you said you were going to do, rather than term limits.

Sorry guys, but universal health care does not mean socialism. Let me give you an example. I am a small business owner and right now I have to pay about 250/yr just for my own coverage(and I have had no health probs and am 50) and if I ever have any major health care problems, I'll get dumped by my insurance company. Also, these premiums rise about 30% annually even tho I file no claims. An obvious, easy solution is to just put all small business owners into their own pool to spread the risk over a large group. No big deal, and definitely not socialism, an easy solution, and an easy change. The only reason I think it probably hasn't already happened is because insurance companies are probably lobbying against it because they'll no longer be able to gouge me. You may be one of the lucky ones who currently has your employer pay your coverage, but if anything happens to your job, you'll be singing a different tune.

Because there are actually people who believe that universal healthcare controlled by the government is a good idea. Just to clarify your question, I'd really like to know when President Bush or any other good republican ever mentioned being in favor of universal healthcare. Just think about a healthcare system that is run like the DMV or the post office...scary thought. Let the government do things like provide for a military, operate the court system, regulate interstate commerce, and handle foreign relations, but keep them out of healthcare.

Bush never promised universal health care. Clinton did promise to work for it, but ultimately it is up to Congress to pass universal health care, not the president. Clinton can only be criticized for making political mistakes in trying to care a health care bill passed. He can't be criticized for not fulfilling his promise, because he did try very hard to get a bill passed.

Because its a bad idea and they know it. The government does not effectively manage ANYTHING!! Why would we want them to run your health care. Look at everything our government f's up! Katrina, the "Big dig", Social security, school system. When we rely on the government we open the flood gates to them wasting our money. The more of our lives they have control or part of, the less choice we have. With less choice service declines. Its one reason why monopolies are illegal.

If you remember Clinton tried it during her husband's presidency and nobody was having any of it. Too expensive. I don't want or need another government handout. Why does anyone think the government is capable of managing our healthcare considering there track record with programs like wellfare, SS, etc.?

Because it's music to everyone's ears. That's one issue that ALL the voters agree on. You'll see lots of candidates taking a stand on that one. It's the safest thing they have to talk about.

They say it because that's what people want to hear. You'd think eventually someone would do something about it, but that's politics.
