Think of the first day in your period as day 1. Your most likely to get pregnant if you have sex on day 11-14. There's no "safe" time. But you're least likely to concieve the days just before,during, and after your period.

the highest chances of getting pregnant are usually a couple days after you ovulate, which is usually the week or so before your period. There is no safe time to have unprotected sex. The chances are significantly lower the first week after your period but there is still a chance that you could get pregnant.
the best idea is to just have protected sex until you either wish to become pregnant, are pregnant, or when you become infertile.

The highest chance is different for every woman. It depends on your cycle length. Ovulation predictor kits can help you determine your most fertile days. You can also do a fertility chart using a basal thermometer. I highly recommend the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility." It explains how to do a chart and what the various results mean. The book is for women trying to conceive, and women looking for a natural form of birth control.

When your trying to get pregnant you dont want to play safe you are in for the long ride. Motherhood is a long term commitment and is not some thing you buy and then you want to return. It just doesnt work that way.

I just answered a question like this. Um, lets say you have your period on 1/4/07. You ovulate on 1/13/07. You can get preggers at that time.
