i am a singer but i don't have any original lyrics that i wrote myself.
is it okay to make a demo singing someone else's lyrics since i'm not selling the demo? and if not is there some songs that are like fair game to make a demo with other than church hymns? if so where could i locate them?

As far as a demo goes you can use other people's songs, but you cannot publish them or play them live without permission. However if you are virtually unknown you will probably not get sued for singing whatever you like.

And as far as writing your own lyrics, I think its important, however Jessica Simpson got a record deal by singing other people's songs. She didnt have original material.

However I dont think she can sing well and she's not that talented anyway . . . good looks probably has a lot to do with it.

Keep up the good work but try to expand your mind and create art with your own tools.
