It does not have hubs. I know that is engaging at the transfer because it goes in neutral and I can tell when I put it into 4Lo because I can take off in fourth gear.I know it's one of the components in the front but I know nothing about those.

I believe that there is a vacuum actuated axle lock on the front axle it should have a couple of small hoses going to it. One may be disconnected or broken, It could also be the electrically controlled valve that opens and shuts the vacuum to the device.

Ok with the new electronic hubs you have to move unless the teeth of the hubs are perfectly in line when you engage 4 wheel drive. Which means if you are stuck, unless the truck can move a few inches the splines will not line up and the tires will not spin. I am sure on your stock truck that it has an open differential and that only one tire in front has to spin in 4x4, both can if there is equal traction , but only one has to. Easiest way to check, go to a parking lot, put the truck in 4x4, and SLOWLY make a hard right or left hand turn. If the steering wheel moves back and forth in your hands the 4x4 is working. Don't forget to disengage 4x4 before driving down the road!

This really sounds like a front actuator problem, check your fuses, I think the actuator runs off the 4x4 fuse. The new style actuator is really nice, it doesn't disengage when you turn the key off. You do have to run a new wire and connect it to the switch on top of the transfer case though. The part number for the new actuator is 26060073, and the wiring harness adapter is part number 12376316, but there may not be any more in stock. You can get a new thermal actuator(part number 26013495, $110 plus shipping from gmpartsdirect.com). You may want to check voltage at the front actuator plug to make sure it gets 12v with the key on and 4x4 selected(engine does not need to run, safer with it off)

Your front axle has a thermal actuator that engages the left to right axle shafts via a fork much like in a manual transmission. Over time the actuator can for lack of better words burn out. Your Chevrolet dealer has a retro fit kit to convert to a electro motor unit. This is only one of the most common problems associated with the 4x4 systems. Good luck, Michael

Is the drive shaft spinning? If it is not, the problem is in the transfer case. If it is, the problem is likely the automatic hubs. You do have hubs, but they are electrically actuated when you shift the transfer case into four wheel drive. If it is the hubs, it could be anything from bad wiring to broken/weak springs (in the hubs).

it can be rear wheel drive only in 4 low. Sounds like a busted transfer case or something in the front drive shaft. Possibly a vacuum disconnect in the front axle also.

Do you have locking hubs? Make sure they are engaged. If you have automatic hubs, then you will have to have them checked by a mechanic.

One of the full-time hubs is out.
