Okay, here are some things my 9-year-old and her friends love doing:
1. making things in the kitchen -- like cookies -- and trying to learn how to follow recipes. We've started making a recipe book of recipes she's actually made.
2. crafts -- especially "real" things like making bracelets and necklaces. Not junky little kids crafts with construction paper and glue. I'm not very crafty, so I buy kits for them.
3. making videos -- They all think they can dance (and it's pretty hysterical watching them), so sometimes we get out the video camera, turn on a cd really loudly and they pretend they're making the video for whatever song is playing. Pretty good times.
4. also with the videos -- They love to pretend they are celebrities, so sometimes one will dress up and the other will "interview" them on the red carpet, and then they switch. It's funny how every sentence begins with "Dahling. .. "
Hope that helps. They also do things like watching movies, playing PlayStation (especially Dance, Dance Revolution and Harry Potter games).

Any kind of craft is a good thing. My nine year old stepdaughter loves to do any craft I can come up with. I like to get on the internet and find some that she can learn from as well.

Help her make cookies and fairy cakes that she can give her mum/dad(?) when they get home.
Write stories together drawing the pictures and reading as you go along - experimenting with voices. maybe do a chapter a day and she can read it to her mum/dad when they get home each night.
If you are going out during the day, try museums, whether air & space or old Egypt etc.
You could do stories about what you've seen that day.
Hope this helps

i always have a great time on the comp with my 8 year old twin girls. I show them interesting sites and funny sites on youtube, i go on craft sites for them and then help them to make things, we go on cookery sites and then choose something to bake which they love. I have a dog and we like to go looking for treasure on blustery days like finding pretty stones or blackberries or acorns.
Also we pick up shells and flat stones and paint them when we get back, the girls put minature scenes on them or just faces.
I also have a remnant box with pretty sparkly bits of material in and beads and buttons and they love to glue and sew things.
One day we made kites from brown paper and twigs, They love it when they have acheived something so go for it..have fun.....oh also have a dressing up box.hats and long skirts. Little girls love it....

Ask the 9 year old what she would normally do when she is at home and see where you can go from there.
