Talk to someone in your HR department. You don't collect unemployment for maternity leave -- it's not the same thing. The only way you can collect is if you're laid off or fired. You should also do your research because you might have some laws that will protect you.

Good luck to you.

You cannot collect unemployment for maternity leave. I just went through the same thing. Now, if your employer has short term disability insurance, you can get paid that way. Unfortunately, my work did not have that type of insurance so what I did was used up all of my vacation and sick time for the six weeks I was off. I had 10 days vacation and like 3 sick days. So, basically, I got paid for 2 weeks. (you figure there are 5 days in a work week X's 2 = 10 days or 2 weeks.) But I was hurtin for those other 4 weeks I didn't get paid! I am still trying to get caught up! I had her October 15, 2006 and had maternity leave (unpaid) until the week of Thanksgiving. Ask you employer if they offer that to their employees. Some good employers have it! Lucky if you do!

Ok, you can't just "leave" work due to being pregant and expect anything! There are forms and ****!

Why? Well, you might get paid maternity leave at some jobs, but MOST jobs have only the Federal Family leave act set up! That means you do NOT get paid, but ARE guaranteed a job on return.. (if the company is big enough AND you filled out the paperwork!).

Now, that doesn't mean you won't get ANY money.. but usually WON'T come from your company.

Where you DO get money is from State Disability! You need to meet with a doctor, you fill out the state disability paperwork, and you get some pay..depends on the state and the laws in your state. In colorado, it is 6 weeks paid at 60% of normal salary or so, for vaginal birth, and 8 weeks (Ithink!) for Ceasarean.

Now, what you have to do ASAP is meet with HR at your OLD job! Why? You should NOT have quit due to being pregnant! That is just walking away from the money and whatever options you had! THEY were supposed to educate you as to your options when you got pregnant.. if they didn't, you can give them **** about it.

They will set you up with the disability paperwork.. if they can't then contact disability directly.

Now, after disability, NO ONE pays you to NOT work expect WELFARE! and that is only for a little while. So you are going to either go back to work after baby and a few weeks of recovery, or you are going to have to get welfare. So start looking into that if that was your "plan".

To help folks answer this better, you need to explain WHEN you left your job, WHY you left your job, what state you live in, WHY you thought you could just quit going to work and that someone would help you out (maybe bad advice from the job?), and all that. Equip folks with more data so they can explain what to do in your specific STATE!

In Canada (except Quebec) maternity leave benefits come from the employment insurance fund, so yes, you would collect a form of "unemployment". Not sure where you are located.

Since you are technically not available for work while giving birth etc, it doesn't make sense that you would qualify for this benefit. But as I mentioned, in Canada you do, so you might elsewhere too.

Maternity benefits can also come from your employer, if this is something they offer. Speak to someone in your employer's human resources department, they should be able to give you pretty good advice regarding the company as well as government benefit options available to you.

Good luck! :)

Most places are required to pay you normally when you are on maternity leave. You need to talk with the head of Human Resources (if it's a big company) or the owner (if it's a small company)

Unemployemt is for when you get fired or laid off. Maternity leave is different. You need to ask your employer.
