I'm a senior and looking into colleges right now along with a lot of my friends. I was talking with a freshman at my school and told him to do his homework. He is much like your son. I told him that a lot of my friends who had made C's were having trouble getting into their dream schools. Don't worry, a C or two won't hurt him, but his freshman year sets up his GPA for the rest of high school. Instead of harrassing him get to know him better by seeing what he wants to do in his future beyond high school. Don't be harsh in your words and stay positive about it. Don't make him annoyed or mad. Also, if he's involved in sports and clubs they require a certain grade, he needs to stay motivated to stay involved. You wont have to ground him if he doesnt make the grades to even participate anyway.
Well, I hope things work out.

Get him an assignment notebook and have him write down his home work for each class and get the teacher to initial that he wrote the correct assignment. Then at home you can check off each assignment that gets completed, so you know if he did all of his homework that night.

I don't let my 9th grader do ANYTHING, including downloading music, going to dances, talking on the phone....ect. Unless her grades are B's or better. I expect her to show me a weekly report every Friday. One that is signed by her teachers.

It appears as though your child is "Bored" with school. If he can get A's and B's without doing the work, it's possible that he is not challenged enough.
You could talk to him about it and/or talk with his teacher(s). Sometimes kids need more challenges.
