We have a grand piano that I assume has a black lacquer finish. We have allowed a thin coating of dust to accumulate on the top.

Does anyone know how to get the dust off so we don't scratch the finish? We have a polishing cloth that came with the piano, but I'm afraid of causing scratches with the dust on the surface.

First use a vacuum cleaner to get the majority of the dust off.
If you have a Lacquer finish Then use a wet clean cloth to wipe the rest of it off. no need for detergents or harsh cleaners.
Most Piano's nowadays do not have lacquer finishes, they have acrylic finishes and plain water will suffice.
My Piano is raw wood which i wipe only with a dry clean cloth.
I use an old cotten "T" shirt. and it works fine.

Never clean keys with anything but warm soapy water on damp cloth/rinse with damp cloth/dry with soft cotton cloth.
NEVER put wax on the finish. Get yourself a microfibre cloth. and wipe it down. Dust frequently to keep the dirt from scratching it.
