i totally agree. especially in school. children need to learn how to respect their elders, be gentleman and lady like, and of course manners. i dont like that their is a law that you cant discipline your kid. of course there is a line that you cant pass but i mean my mom disciplined us and none of our family are in jail, drunks, or taking drugs nothing like that. i believe that it was our moms discipline and if we take that away from our parents or parents in the future than everything will change for the worst.

The California law people are mentioning is for children younger than 3 years old.
There is no law saying parents can't discipline their children, the law is about spanking (specifically, very young children).
Beating on a child is NOT disciplining that child.
I must say I'm amused at those who think that violence is a way to teach the young to be civilized.
Violence is NOT civilized, it's the opposite.
Although I'm against hitting, I'm not sure the law is the right way to deal with it.

I think it was california that passed an 'anti-spanking' law. You can't hit your children any more, but you can still discipline them, theoretically. Teachers only have the power to send a child to the principals office- thats about it. Stupid, isn't it? Teachers are no longer allowed to yell, and in some schools, they can't even correct mistakes. (no red pens, no correcting answers on the board, ect. Its 'bad for a child's self esteem'. Bullshit)

There's no law about disciplining your children. If there has been a law passed, it's against physically disciplining your children. There is a huge difference there.
When it comes to altering the behavior of a child, Positive Punishment (the addition of an unwanted stimulus) (IE Hitting them) is the least affective means of behavior modification. Reinforcing good behavior is much more effective than punishing bad. And by hitting your child, you only cause resentment and fear to grow between the two of you.

I am of the firm and unmovable opinion that "spare the rod and spoil the child" is the gospel truth. I'd much rather shed a few tears over a warm bottom at the age of five than to cry rivers of tears while visiting them in prison when they're 25!
Dr. Spock was an idiot** , and all you have to do is look around at our culture to see the damage he has caused. Teen pregnancy, no respect for women, elders or even each other. More than 50% of marriages end in divorce (or worse - abuse.)
P.S: to joecool123_us - And just how many children do you have, or have had, and what are their ages??

When will people learn that spanking is not the only form of discipline? People can be so ignorant sometimes.
And no, it does not make me angry. It makes me happy that children in that state will no longer be hit and abused because they hurt some adult's feelings.
I was never spanked and unlike some of my friends, I've never been arrested, never been pregnant, never caused any trouble. I do very well in college and I am a loving person. Guess the myth isn't true!

No, it doesn't make me angry.
What makes me angry are the bleeding hearts who nowadays define what used to be family simple discipline as "child abuse". Kids are waaaaay too mollycoddled these days. I don't mean to belittle the issue of child abuse, which is very real and very serious, but the campaign against it loses credibility each time some crackpot grossly misuses the term "child abuse" to describe anything the kid doesn't like. That makes me really mad.

I think that more kids should be sent off to boarding school so that they can learn respect and be disciplined!
Now that's what I call discipline

It upsets me that parents don't set boundaries for children. And they wonder why they are out of control when they turn 16 and 17. If I acted like some of the kids I see now I'd have got and ear full and all my privileges taken away. Some parents just don't think it's a problem and that's the real problem. I wouldn't trust my dog to some of the parents today.
