Never canceled. Just made one of the crappiest endings to a long running series of all time.

Technically the show wasn't cancelled. The shows creators ended the show after 167 episodes and 4 movies. The show was concluded without an actual ending to the series. The manga, however is still being published in Japan. The series still airs on Adult Swim. Inuyasha ended September 13, 2004 in Japan. The last episode didn't air outside Japan until late 2006.

It was never canceled. They are just not showing it no more.
