DirecTV is cheaper & more reliable. I have the DirecTV HR10-250 which is a HD-DVR. This receiver is awesome plus it has integrated Tivo. You don't need a Tivo box & you don't pay Tivo the monthly fee. You buy the HR10-250 then pay an extra $5 a month for DVR service + $10 a month for HD channels. But let me warn you that DirecTV doesn't have that many HD channels yet.

Directv is much better than Comcast. I have Comcast, now and used to have directv. Comcast is way more expensive than Directv. Comcast offers you what sounds like a good deal up front...cable,highspeed internet, and phone...all on 1 bill for $99
a month. What they don't tell you is that it's not really $99 a month. There are a lot of fees and taxes they charge. Your bill
ends up being over $300 the first month (installation and equipment fees.) They say you get a coupon for a rebate on the equipment but I have not got it yet and I keep calling them.
The regular bill is about $225 a month with all the extra stuff.
Plus, they don't tell you the rate is only good for 6 months then you have to pay regular price....$400 a month with every charge added. Plus if you don't keep service for a year they charge you a $500 cancellation fee.
Also, if you have trouble with your service and call them, it takes over a hour to get through. Then, it usually takes 2 days for someone to come out and see what the problem is.
I've had the tech out to my house 5 times this month for the same problem.
Plus, they bill you a $35 charge each time a tech comes out even if the problem is not your fault.
My cousin has Comcast, too. She paid her bill in full, a week late.
Eventhough she paid the bill, they still disconnected her service.
They apologised and said it was an error and wouldn't happen again. It took them 3 days to turn everything on, again.
The same thing has happened 5 months in a row, now.
Stay away from Comcast.

I think DIRECTV is better because in a few months or at least before 2008, DIRECTV will provide 100 HD channels or less. 16 channels will be HD version of SD channels, including Cartoon Network. DIRECTV might also provide Video-On-Demand. They will sell an integrated reciever and 17" LCD TV. You might think the product is ugly. It doesn't need a satellite dish, but you might need to point the antenna at the Southwest.

We ditched Comcast after they told it us it would take them 2 weeks to fix a problem on their line that was causing a total outage. We went with Dish - their DVR Advantage package is awesome - JUST BE SURE TO CALL THEM. We ordered by phone, and our bill got all screwed up. Fortunately their customer support was pretty friendly and immediately recognized the problem. We don't have Verizon FIOS out here yet, so can't compare.

I have family who've switched from Comcast to Direct TV to save money . . . They had to give up their free On Demand, their signal Consistently goes out with picture or sound or both. In the 3 months they've had it they've had the repair guy come out to "fix" it 5 times already (obviously not doing a good job) plus all that money they were supposed to save is no longer since that deal was just during football season.

I have Comcast, the DVR is wonderful, it does record in HD we have all the HD channels (at no extra cost) our On Demand is free (with exception of brand new releases, which only stays that way for a month or less) and is available in HD at no extra cost, plus we have NEVER had any repair men out to fix it.

I go with comcast, it's a better deal for your money, it's not cheaper but you get what you pay for.

I would go with DirectTV but definitely get the biggest package with the most channels. That is the main reason I see for using it over cable - more channels. If you don't plan to do that, then whatever.
