Fiber pills generally are what are referred to as "bulk laxatives". This means they pull water from the colon to soften the stool. The important thing to remember is to drinks lots and lots of water when taking them. That means 10-12 glasses a day!
If not enough water is taken in, the bulk laxative will actually turn the stool to cement and you will be in worse trouble than ever.

Other types work to soften the stool (such as colace) and another type to "move" the stool (such as senna).

Wiki has a nice article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laxative
If you are young, do not take laxatives! Dependenece is nasty. Every nurse has horror stories of elderly women who need disimpacting daily due to a lifetime abuse.
The best recomendation is to eat high fiber foods, drink plenty of water, exercise.

I hope that helps

As a general rule yes they do. Any type of fiber will bring about regularity. Which is not a bad thing, unless you are over doing it. Too much fiber isn't good either, so be careful.
