I was once told that the human spirit feels a sense of accomplishment on their birthdays, and is more likely to concede to the body dying on near this day.

Some people may be trying to hang on and achieve a certain goal for the sake of themselves or realtives. My grandpa lived to 100 and died shortly after. Others might hang on to their birthdays just to so get a party, lol They say that most people die in January, because people hang on to celebrate Christmas. But, I think it has to do more with the fact that all the relatives come at Christmas and then no one goes and visits the old people in January. They feel lonely and die. Plus the weather is cold and they can't go out and get to the doctor if they are sick.

Assuming "on or near" means within 7 days, you've got about a 4% chance of dying on or near your birthday. Odds are, it's got to happen to someone.
