Although the players in both rugby and American football both weigh in at around the 20 stone plus mark, most rugby tackles are made from the side or behind where as in American football players tackle head on.Injuries due to tackling in rugby although frequent are rarely serious.Injuries in American football may be less frequent (apart from strains and other minor injuries) but are generally serious.

Your statement is factually incorrect. Many international rugby players (mostly, but not exclusively, forwards) wear scrum caps and soft padding around the shoulders.
Basically, because rugby players have to be generalists, they run around a lot more and indulge in relatively less contact than American footballers. They have to husband their strength and may be active for 3 minutes solid in a multi-phase possession. They also may have to play for 80 minutes solid.
American footballers, on the other hand, are specialists. Kickers may play an entire game without being touched. Linemen hit or get hit on every single play. They get a break between plays and get substituted regularly (typically when possession changes hands), meaning they can put more intensity into each individual block or tackle.
The two sports require different skill sets and physical attributes. A rugby player would be shocked by the force of the tackling and blocking. A gridiron player would be on his knees after 5 minutes of a rugby match. Neither is 'better', they're just different. I love watching both and will continue to do so.

Because in 1905 18 players in the national league (which had way less players than today) DIED from injuries in football games, and President Roosevelt basically said they had to start protecting the players or the game would be banned.
There are still about 25 people that get killed by football in the US every year (mostly high school) and injuries in the NFL are just as common as in rugby, if not more so. The sports are completely different, they just have the same shaped ball and some similarities in how you score so people compare them. The hits in football are far far harder than in rugby because of the size of the players and the style of the game.

rugby is a contact sport, football is a collision sport. in rugby, the players are simply trying to tackle the ball carrier to the ground. in football, the players are flying around and trying to take each others heads off. a european rugby player would be seriously hurt if they tried to step out on the field with the bigger, faster, stronger players in the NFL, with or without pads.
rugby is for people too big to play soccer, but too small to play real football

American football players on average as much bigger, stronger, and faster than any rugby player. The speed of the game and the size of the players warrants the use of the padding to avoid serious injuries and possible death.

Well this is a smarter sport. It has been shown that without the equipment people would get severly hurt. Is that what the spectators want to see? Players would not last long. I used to play tackle football as a youngster on a muddy field with no equipment. I can't imagine grown men lasting very long doing that.

In real football( American) they wear alot of protective gear but it allows them to hit much harder- in rugby if you put a shoulder into a guy ( which is against the rules- i ' ve been told) and you will break your collar bone. I have seen this happen to lots of people in the States. American football has alot more head-to-head contact.

They wear protective gear in American Football as they are required to by US law. The law was passed by one of the presidents ages ago because he was sick of the players being killed as a result of blows to the head

watch a couple of the better defensive teams you'll see why pretty quick. guys get the hell knocked out of them and with the pads suffer some pretty bad injuries sometimes. I'm not familiar with rugby so i really can't compare the two. Heres a URL to a video. its got other stuff but its got some pretty hard hits you can watch and you can compare. http://www.bofunk.com/video/2380/ouch.html
