Ok. So, in my English III Enrichment class were suppose to be reading a book. Soon, (tomorrow) we're going to the library to prepare for our research papers. Let me give you an example of what we're suppose to do:

For example, my friend is reading a book about Frederick Douglass (a Slave). She has to write a paper about something that she can incorporate the book in. So, she's writting about either Discrimination or about The Causes of The Civil War - And, in her essay she will incorporate her book a little.

I need suggestions about:

1. I'm reading In Cold Blood, what topics should I write my paper about? (Specifics please, I'm looking for something that will have a lot of information about, or something very interesting ... I'm only on chapter two and I will read a 100 pages today for my Eng. class tomorrow.

2. How the hell do you pronounce his last name "Capote"? (Stupid question, I guess).

.... Thanks!

Yes. Kah-Poe-Tay. In Cold Blood was hailed as the first "non-fiction novel", and changed the literary landscape in America. His narrative style of writing the events of the Clutter family murder and his personal closeness to the perpetrators right to the gallows revolutionized writers' approach to news events. It made him a literary giant. Enjoy the book, but pity the poor Clutter family, and be careful not to pity the murderers.

Capote is pronounced in three syllables, a short 'a', long 'o', and the final 'e' is also long... kah-poh-tee

i recently read "in cold blood" and also recently saw the film "capote" starring philip seymour hoffman. you might choose to write about how the use of psychology and psychiatric evidence has evolved in the courts since the time of the novel. you could write about capote's ambition to create a new literary genre, the so-called "non-fiction novel". did he succeed? are there any other examples of this genre since his time? (maybe the electric kool aid acid test, or the right stuff, both by tom wolfe)
you could write about his friendship with harper lee... you could write about crimes and murders similar to those described in the book.

i love this subject, although i am not TOO clear on exactly what your paper is supposed to be, i hope my suggestions are helpful. feel free to email me or message me if you want to discuss this further. i'd like to know how your paper turns out and what your thoughts on the book are when you finish it.

Truman Capote and Harper Lee of To Kill a Mockingbird Fame worked closely to research the murders In Cold Blood depicts. A newly published book titled Mockingbird, the author's last name is Shields, unveils the relationship between Lee and Capote and provides a nice bibliography you could use to develop your own research. It may be more reading than you want to do, but it reveals how critical Lee was to Capote's success with his novel. She got many of the interviews using her southern openess and warmth, whereas he tended to offend folks with his brashness. In addition, they correlated info, and he used her material in his book without properly crediting her. I thought it was a pretty interesting side of both of their stories, especially when you think she modeled the character of Dill in To Kill a Mockingbird after her childhood friend Truman Capote. Good luck on your project. Hope you find something interesting to research.

Americans have always been a little bit attracted and sympathetic to criminals. Capote was certainly ambivalent about the two he wrote about, especially Perry Smith. Look for parallels between Capote's views of his subjects and public opinion of other widely known, celebrated murderers (Jesse James, Bonnie and Clyde, etc).
