I have to do a survey on the topic above for school so if you could answer the fallowing questions with a Yes, No, or Undecided it would mean a lot.

1) Do you belive there are problems on Earth?
2) Do you belive there are issues in space that need us?
3) Do you belive that the US is using to much money on space exploration instead of more imprtant things?
4) Are you interested in astronomy?
5) Would you want to be an astronomer?
6)With so many problems here on Earth should the USA continue an agressive exploration of space?

1) Problems on Earth? Of course.
2) Issues in space that need us? Issues don't need people. But there is much of value in space waiting to be exploited.
3) Is the US using too much money on space exploration instead of more important things? No. Every dollar spent on space has generated multiple dollars in products and technology.
4) Am I interested in astronomy? Somewhat.
5) Would Iwant to be an astronomer? Doubtful.
6)With so many problems here on Earth should the USA continue an agressive exploration of space? I think space exploration can provide many answers to today's problems. Yes, we should. But the biggest thing we need to do is to develop asteroid mining technology. This could be a great boon for many of the world's poor if handled properly.

1) Yes. Always have been, always will be.
2) Yes. Extinction-level events are a matter of "when", not "if".
3) No. I think it could be better spent within the space program, but I still believe NASA is woefully underfunded.
4) Yes.
5) Undecided.
6) Yes. Nobody's worse off because we went to the moon.

Questions like this continue to amaze me. You need to be clear about one thing. If we do not develop the means to leave this planet we will either die on it, or get knocked back into the stone age. Whatever 'problems' we have here on earth, throwing NASA"s budget at them wont fix them, because its really not that much money compared to our total budget. Also, whatever those problems may be are not gonna matter a whit when a comet or asteroid of decent size comes along and smacks us. This is not a question of if, it is only a matter of WHEN.
Developing space technology and exploring space will allow us to either be off the planet so humanity does not go extinct (like the dinosaurs) or to at least defend ourselves when the time comes.

I find it strange the obsession to explore space when we haven't even searched our own oceans.

But rockets look cooler.
